Writing and Editing Experience
I have been a professional freelance writer for more than fifteen years, in both California and Colorado. My clients are drawn from a range of industries and new projects are always welcomed. I have written and/or edited websites, business plans, marketing materials, articles, newsletters, and speeches. I frequently consult with authors who wish to develop a professional query letter or book proposal and/or fine-tune their manuscripts for publication.
I specialize in working with scholarly manuscripts, doing copyediting, proofreading, and developmental editing. I am on the freelance lists of a number of premium publishers. My particular expertise and interest is in developmental editing, working with scholars who need assistance in sharpening their arguments, reducing their word count, and generally making their manuscripts more accessible to the general reader as well as the academic one. I have been particularly effective with scholars/authors for whom English is a second language. A number of Series Editors have added me to their recommendation lists for their authors.

Queries and book proposals require not only excellent writing skills,
but also a knowledge of marketing. They must be put together in a manner
that grabs the attention of an agent or publisher who sees hundreds
of proposals every day. This requires market research and consultations
on style that many authors welcome. At Carstens Communications, we enjoy

I have spent many years pursuing my educational and personal interests in developing countries. In the process, I have gained substantial expertise to draw upon in editing and proofreading nonfiction, fiction, and scholarly materials. Geographic areas of greatest knowledge, in order of familiarity, would be: Mexico, Latin America as a whole (including Central America), Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Subject areas would be politics, business, economics and finance, anthropology and/or archeology, culture, and art history.
